"Three miles outside of Carrboro, down Dairyland Road, will put you in front of what milk/ice cream emporium?" The hint was "What a view."
The answer is the Maple View Farm Ice Cream Store, a place for children, ice cream, sunsets and rocking chairs. The farm itself had its beginnings up north, in Corinna, Maine. According to www.mapleviewfarm.com, "the farm existed at that location from the time the first settlers homesteaded central Maine in early 1800s. Bob Nutter is the fifth generation of his family to farm land - first in Maine and now in North Carolina."
Then, in 1963, "A better milk market and climate for double cropping was found in North Carolina. Within two months, the calves, farm families and equipment moved 1,000 miles to the present location. Maple View Farm was back in business milking cows in Orange County, N.C."
The retail store is open daily, noon till 7 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. till 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Double cropping is when more than one crop is planted during the year.
Besides their delicious pumpkin ice cream pie, "The menu includes ice cream cones, ice cream in convenient pint containers, shakes and floats. In addition to vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, the parlor's standard flavors include butter pecan, honey toasted almond, double chocolate, coffee, cookies and cream and cookie dough. Sorbet is available in pineapple basil and green apple. There are also sugar-free quantities of toasted almond and strawberry sundae."
And don't miss the giant shakes with Oreo cookie bits and bites. Call 960-5535 for directions.
A pair of movie tickets are on their way to Howard.
Now it's time to reveal next week's Challenge. Here's how it works. Every week, we'll pose a trivia question that has something to do with our community or North Carolina. The question might be about something that happened 20 years ago or someone who made the news just yesterday.
If you think you know the answer, send e-mail to chquiz@aol.com, or mail it on a postcard to Chapel Hill Challenge, The Chapel Hill Herald, 106 Mallette St., Chapel Hill, NC 27516. You also can send us a fax at 918-1055. Make sure you include your name, address and phone number. Answers must be received by Thursday of the same week. Employees of the Durham Herald Co. are not eligible for the Challenge.
Each week, there will be a drawing from all the correct answers. The winner will receive a pair of movie tickets donated by the Lumina Theater in Southern Village.
Ready to give it a try? Then find some food in your cupboards to donate while pondering the following:
Name the organization responsible for providing 75,000 meals to the homeless and needy in Chapel Hill/Carrboro.
Hint: "It runs on volunteers and faith."
Good luck!
